Greyson Chance ‘Hold On ‘Til The Night’ Song Meanings

Greyson Chance told us in his own words what each song on his debut album, Hold On ‘Til The Night means to him.

Below you can read a short summary for each song on the ablum including: Waiting Outside The Lines, Unfriend You, Home Is In Your Eyes, Hold On ‘Til The Night, Heart Like Stone, Little London Girl, Cheyenne, Summertrain, Stranded and Take A Look At Me Now.

The summaries are in Greyson’s own words.

Waiting Outside The Lines

Waiting Outside the Lines is a song about getting over your troubles, fears, and anxieties. The main theme of the song is just to be confident and free! I remember when I first heard the song I instantly loved it. I really liked it ‘cause it was very universal and big. I love performing this song at my live show because all the kids wave their hands back and forth. And there’s always the one person with a lighter! This is one of my favorite records from the album.

Unfriend You

Unfriend You! There is a pretty funny story to making this record. When I first heard the song, I just laughed! I thought it was the most brilliant and simple theme to a pop song. The idea of breaking up with someone and ‘unfriending’ them was gold. So I went into the studio and recorded it. I worked with the legendary Billy Steinberg for the first time on this song, so I went into the studio not really knowing what to except. Once I started to sing Billy kicked his head back and said, “Whoooo, this boy can sing! We’re going to make a lot of money!” From that day on Billy was one of my favorite producers to work with! He is a great friend.

Home Is In Your Eyes

“Home Is In Your Eyes” is the story of me missing a girl when I’m away from home. When this all started, I was traveling so much that I was really missing my friends, and a certain girl. So I went into the studio and put all my emotions into this record. It’s very calming and peaceful, listening to this album relaxes me. My favorite line from the song is the opening from the chorus, “I wanna be holding your hand in the sand by the tire swing.” I think that line is brilliant. This song puts a very peaceful and emotionally touch on the record.

Hold On ‘Til The Night

This song is very meaningful to me. When I went into the studio to write this record I was kinda sad. I was away from home, missed my friends, and I needed some courage. So I went into the studio and told myself that I was going to write a song that was about gaining confidence. And this was the result. I love the lyric, “Running to the light, get out of your own way, not afraid to fight, believing what you say.” I am telling my fans to not be afraid. Whenever I listen to this song I instantly feel happy and strong.

Heart Like Stone

“Heart Like Stone” is one of my favorites from the album. I wrote this song with one of my favorite people to collaborate with, Danielle Brisebois. I met Danielle at her studio which is inside of her house. I wanted to write a true heartbreak song that really describes the emotions of that feeling. At the time I was going through something rough and it just felt like my heart was lifeless like a stone. I also wanted my fans to be able to relate to this song, and everybody can relate to the concept. So we went into the studio and wrote this song! I really like the vocal on this song, it is a little more edgy then most of the vocals cut on this album. I hope all my fans can relate and dance to this song when they are sad.

 Little London Girl

“She lights my world my Little London Girl!” This song is a very fun and upbeat record. When I was on my first trip to London for promo, I had some studio time booked. I loved London a lot, it gave me a fun rock ‘n’ roll type of vibe. It was always raining and cloudy and to be honest, on the verge of being depressing. So I wanted to make a song that shone through all the clouds and the rain. The original idea was, “You light my world my little American girl.” But I wanted to make something about the magical city of London. This song is about meeting a girl in London who is very rock ‘n’ roll. She is wearing leather tights with Ray Ban’s on, that type of girl. London is such an amazing city and I wanted to highlight it with this song!

Cheyenne

The next song is Cheyenne. This song is very close to my heart. I love this song cause it is the most soulful one on the album. I always love how the lyric is very simple. “Please don’t break my heart, Cheyenne” Pleading to this girl that I love for her not to break my heart. One of my favorite things from this song is the fact that we recorded live strings. It was so much fun watching a cellist come in and play from his heart. This song is probably one of my favorites from the whole album.

Summertrain

This has a very European feel so it stands out from the other songs on the album. This song has a very calm and peaceful feeling, and it is very relaxing. I love the lyrical message behind Summertrain. The song is all about not being afraid and just taking things easy and being relaxed about the punches that come with life. I sometimes get very stressed about work, home, and sometimes love. This song is very inspirational to me because it can always take me to a different world. I hope you enjoy as much as I do!

Stranded

Song number 9 is called Stranded. “I wanna be stranded on this island with you!” is the the first line of the chorus. This song starts off nice and fun with a cool beachy vibe and some cool guitars. I love this record because I love the beach. This song was inspired by the ocean and the feelings of hanging out on the beach in LA. When we were recording the album I was living in a house right off the ocean, so I took all the surroundings around me as inspiration. The type of people, the glamour, and the beach. I really like singing this song because I have room to go anywhere with it!

Take a Look At Me Now

The last song of the record is Take A Look At Me Now. This song is very special to me. It holds a certain part of my heart. I wrote this song about the relationship between me and my fans and how we have grown so much. I remember when I had 5 people in my meet & greets, and now I had one the other night with 5,000! This song is telling all the people that didn’t believe in me, and doubted what I was capable of, to take a look at me now. This song is always for all my fans. When I wrote this I pictured me and my fans just running away together and leaving all the haters and doubters behind. This is the last song of the record and I believe it ends “Hold On ‘Til The Night” quite beautifully.
